What is the Cheaper Home Batteries Program?

The Australian federal government launched the Cheaper Home Batteries Program on the 1st of July, a major initiative to make solar batteries more affordable for homeowners, small businesses, and community facilities. It’s part of a $2.3 billion expansion of the existing Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES), which previously supported solar panel installation.

The program is an incentive designed to help Australia combat the current energy crisis and work towards a greener more sustainable future while easing the burden of the financial cost associated with this positive transition.

How Much Can You Save?

• The rebate provides ~30% off the upfront purchase and installation costs. That’s up to $372 per kilowatt-hour (kWh) of usable battery capacity
• For a typical household battery (11–13 kWh), this equates to around $3,300–$4,000 in savings
• Keep in mind the rebate amount will decrease every 12 months for the duration of the program.

Who Is Eligible for this Federal rebate?

The Federal Battery Rebate is accessible to all Australians through the Cheaper Home Batteries Program provided they meet the criteria.

Eligibility and Conditions:

• Homeowners, small businesses, and community facilities (e.g., sporting clubs, libraries) are eligible.
• Must be paired with a new or existing rooftop solar PV system 
• Applicable to systems with nominal capacity of 5–100 kWh, with rebate applying to the first 50 kWh of usable capacity 
• Only brand-new systems count; existing batteries must be commissioned after 1 July 2025 to qualify
